What is the Libertarian Party?
The Libertarian party is devoted to a smaller government and more personal freedom. We believe that the government that governs least, governs best. The US government has grown by leaps and bounds and its bureacratic tenticles are strangling our precious freedoms. The major parties in our country have abandoned the founders concept of limited government. We now pay over 50% in taxes if one combines local, state, federal, sales, and a myriad of hidden taxes we barely know are there! The largest employer in the United States is not a fast growing computer company, or a manufacturing company, it is government! Government employs 22 million Americans, thats roughly 20% of the work force! That reality alone should be enough to convince anyone that government is too large, with too much control over our personal and economic lives. The fiscal budget for 2000-2001 will top one Trillion dollars! If that number doesn't scare you I don't know what will. The Libertarian Party is the only party that is serious about slashing spending and returning our lost freedoms! If you are a freedom loving American please consider voting Libertarian. To find out more about the party please see our links page.
How can the Libertarian Party change government?
The Libertarian Party is focusing on eliminating government waste, scaling back the amount of government regulations over our personal lives, and decreasing the US militarys presense overseas. To enable Americans to find jobs, we must do everything in our power to give workers, and the companies they work for, the ability to compete in world markets. The Libertarian Party supports five major initiatives to achieve this goal: 1.)Phase out all direct and indirect subsidies to foreign nations, foreign companies, and foreign citizens. 2.)Eliminate the double taxation of corporate profits.3.)Eliminate regulations and mandates that make companies less competitive and cost jobs. 4.)Unilaterally end all domestic subsidy programs, trade barriers and tariffs. 5.)End government economic meddling that results in depressions and recessions that destroy jobs.
Public schools are supposed to provide a good education for our children. More often than not, they don't. Each year public schools graduate more and more students who are unable to read, write, or do basic arithmetic. Our children's talents are wasted because we continue to trust politicians to do this important job. Politicians have had decades to fix these problems, and they haven't been able to do so. To transfer control of education from bureaucrats to parents and teachers and encourage alternatives to the public school monopoly, the Libertarian Party would: 1.)Support a true market in education -- one in which parents and students would not be stuck with a bad local school, because they could choose another. 2.)Implement measures such as tax credits so that parents will have the financial ability to choose among schools. 3.)Provide financial incentives for businesses to help fund schools and for individuals to support students other than their own children. 4.)Eliminate the U.S. Department of Education, which spends billions on education and educates no one. The growth of this agency and its numerous regulations is a major reason for runaway costs in American schools.
Law-abiding, responsible citizens do not and should not need to ask anyone's permission or approval to engage in a peaceful activity. Gun ownership, by itself, harms no other person and cannot morally justify criminal penalties. Rather than banning guns, the politicians and the police should encourage gun ownership, as well as education and training programs. A responsible, well-armed and trained citizenry is the best protection against domestic crime and the threat of foreign invasion. America's founders knew that. It is still true today.
Every year, they take 12.4% of your income to prop up their failed Social Security system - a system that is heading toward bankruptcy. Libertarians believe you should be able to opt out of Social Security and invest your money in your own personal retirement account. An account that you own and control - one that politicians can't get their hands on. Libertarians will introduce and support legislation to give you that choice, and put you in control of your own retirement future.
These are just a few of the improvements in government the Libertarian Party is devoted to. We are a group of concerned Americans who want returned, our personal and economic freedoms and the self-representative government of our founders. I hope you will agree with us that government is too far removed from the everyday citizen to be effective and the solution to it is rooted in the Libertarain Party!
